Excellent post. I like it. Provides some good food for thought like do we too often feel the need to be 'masters of multiskilling'? Perhaps we sometimes try too hard to wear too many hats at the same time? True, it can be quite overwhelming. The result - an overworked and overwhelmed Mum and/or Women in business.

Is multitasking the key to higher productivity? Perhaps not. Like everything else, a little can be good for you, like chocolate ... just a little now and again.

Multitasking in moderation is best!

The importance of diaries has proven itself time and time again. Not only those of Samuel Pepys, from whom we learnt a lot more than just about the fire of London, but now they're assessing atmospheric changes and weather patterns through diaries of sea explorers and ship logs from various centuries, of which detailed descriptions of the weather was the norm.

It's a pity we don't still use the pen and ink versions, as they are more likely to survive the ravishes of time than electronic versions. My mother publishes books about the lost buildings of Brighton, and there was an incident when she wanted to republish one edition that had gone out of print, only to find her back-up tapes were not compatible with her new computer!

The challenges you speak of, Alice, are very real and most of us, face them at one point in time. Noticing how much energy is gained from being busy is a particularly interesting one so is the one about increasing in creativity and learning through working in a different environment.
Being aware and taking the time to reflect objectively on the situation when at time we feel driven by panic, using that time to analyse or even create a business plan… What a positive way forward.
I wish you and all others at the same place right now, in this challenging business environment, the best with your review process. I keep hearing from people who succeed through shear resilience, so I wish you all a good dose of that too.

The reason why I am contemplating getting a part time job is to receive a guaranteed flow of financial resources. None of us can work with an empty cash pot, as it isn't possible to run a business with nothing, especially during these economic times when credit is not so easily available.

Taking on a part time job may be alien to time-starved businesses, but in a way it forces you to be more resourceful with what time you do have. Work becomes more prolific within the allocated pockets of time you are allowed, and there's the old saying 'If you want anything done, ask a busy woman.' I admit I got more done when I was managing four Governing Bodies than I do now.

Apart from banishing procrastination, ideas can be arrived at while you are 'working elsewhere': a change of scene certainly gets the creative juices flowing. Take a look at how your employer is thriving or failing, and learn from them.

I intend to take a step back and thoroughly analyse my business. It will force me to create proper business plans, work out strategic processes to arrive at my goal, and obtain my motive to earn the desired amount each week.

A clear vision will help lead the way! We often can get side tracked. It is good to stop, reassess and remember our beginning vision. Getting of f the track sometimes is not a bad thing, as long as you have a clear vision of where you are going next!

I do think a company should have a clear vision but be evolving and adapting with the times. Otherwise, you can be left in the dust!

Thank you Annie. In another comment elsewhere, the fact that you are Twittering to an audience was brought up and your tweets should reflect that. I answered to find out what she thought about automated tweeting, which churn out pre-written tweets throughout the day to provide a 'presence' on your Twitter stream, yet you are not there to respond to any answers. What do you think?

This is a very well stated blog post, and I agree 100%. While not an entrepreneur, I am a Senior Consult with a growing firm. I spend part of my time in a corporate office, and part in a home office. I have a young child, who is very demanding of my attention, and truly, on the home-based days, I find myself scrambling to keep track of everything with a little one begging for play time in the background.

I do much the same thing you do to collect myself and my thoughts - I clear out some time, ship my husband and son off for some father-son bonding time, and pull out a notebook to start jot my thoughts from the days prior, and to organize and strategize not only for the upcoming week, but for a top level goal. I can get very caught up in planning for improvements, solutions for problem areas with the business (and client businesses), and I actually consider this to be a period of relaxation - alone with my thoughts, working on a vision and the steps to achieving the vision. Some of my best and most valuable strategies come from these mini-sessions of solitude with my thoughts.
