“Opportunity is missed by most people because it’s dressed in overalls and it looks like work”. I read this statement yesterday. It stopped me in my tracks.
I find daily cooking a real bore, something that has to be done; a chore, work. As a result I approach it with the mentality of doing a good job: focus on health, balance, simplicity and efficiency; easy to prepare, quickly on the plate. The result is a meal that satisfies a need in a pleasant manner but no more.
By contrast when I host a dinner party, I am all fired up, energised and keen to experiment, try something new. Cooking becomes a pleasure, filled with discoveries and experimentations, frustrating at times, but that generate a sense of creativity a feel good factor daily cooking does not touch. Interestingly, it is also eaten differently. Ok the wine helps, but somehow some of the pleasure put into creating the food seeps into the evening.
Same task, results poles apart. The only difference; the way I think about them. I just wonder where else in my life do I limit my creativity energy and the impact I have, just because I label what I do ‘work’. Does this sound familiar to you?
