I went to a workshop the other day in which the speaker was a young chap who had made a £multi-million business and successfully sold it before he was 30.
Of course this kind of person is a big draw, as loads of other people will want also to be in the situation he claims to be. The room was full of people who were considerably over 30, all of them business owners, all looking haggard and care worn as they obviously wanted to learn the secret of his success.
In walked our speaker. Young, attractive, dressed in a natty Italian suit, with a big smile on his face. Certainly he gave the impression he was in the situation he described himself. He admitted he wasn’t a whizz at technology, as he struggled with the powerpoint he had set up, but he certainly had the gift of the gab and the methodology of getting his story across in a convincing, enthralling way.
His secret appeared to be very simple. He REALLY, REALLY wanted to be successful, he worked all hours God sent and more, he blagged his way through everything, and he made sure he was 100% positive at the start of every day.
The first and the last reasons were the ones that struck a chord with me. Sure, I had done numbers two and three, and it had got me only so far. But what about the others?
They are about being totally 100%. They are about encompassing your whole life, and more, into what you want to achieve. They are about completely changing your mindset to totally focus on what you do and omitting anything that gets in your way. It’s about setting your goals and doing anything and everything to achieve them and more, even to the detriment of everything you hold most dear (he mentioned his failed marriage several times).
But the most impressive part was about the power of being positive. He showed us a mood-o-meter in his powerpoint, and talked about what level we were between 1 and 10. To us he already appeared to be pretty upbeat, bouncing about in front of his screen, but apparently he was only around the level 7.
Wow, what would he be like at level 10? He showed us. Suddenly he punched the air several times, shouting ‘yes!’ in a very loud voice, and he completely changed. Really this had to be seen to be understood. The man appeared to be about 10 feet tall, he bristled with electricity, his smile was as wide as the room, his energy was enough for over 10 men, and he encompassed the whole available space. It was a fantastic sight, a total shock, and a lot of people were either mesmerised or cowering under their chairs.
I enjoyed the spectacle immensely. Now I could see where he got his energy from, his force to drive him to his goals, his raison d’être to going out every day and making money. This transformation certainly worked for him, even though now he didn’t need to do this performance every morning any more. But would it work for me?
I tried it when I got home, perhaps a little half-heartedly, because I was both a little skeptical and worried at what it might do. I punched the air and shouted ‘yes!’. Immediately I felt a force spread through me, a surge of electricity, a pulse of positivity, and it felt wonderful! I could see how this could become addictive! I floated around my house for the rest of the afternoon, obviously on a self-induced high, thinking everything was right with the world.
But will I do this every day? This goes back to the first point he made in the meeting, that you REALLY need to want to succeed in business. I lost 3 stone in weight because I REALLY wanted to be thinner. For five months I totally concentrated on my diet, my lifestyle and staving off hunger pains. And you know what, I achieved it! If I really want to succeed in my business, I need to both punch the air every morning as well as continue to have that overwhelming burning desire that takes over from everything else. And until I start to do that, I will continue to drift on as I am doing at the moment, only achieving about 50% of what I am capable of doing.
So if I am going to do this, who else will join me?
