Ok, admittedly this is not the first time I have been at the receiving end of someone’s sales pitch that gets repeated again and again at every opportunity. To be fair, I should be used to it, having run a networking group until a few years ago.
But when it happened to me recently, it reminded me of people who, when failing to make themselves understood, simply repeat the same thing over and over, only much louder.
Those who know me personally know that I have no problem with saying, “No thank you.” Although if I’m talking to someone I know, like and trust, I would probably try to package the message more subtly and change the subject, to send out signals that I’m not interested.
The problem is that so many sales messages are just one way.
When you are the sales person who doesn’t hear what people say (or consider what it is that they are not saying) and worse, ignore their body language too, you will not only get your listeners’ backs up, you may put a stop to the relationship!
The problem with selling is that when you don’t know how to do it, it can be quite intimidating. And when you have an exciting offering it is very easy to get so enthusiastic about it that you think everyone under the sun will want it.
Don’t I know this?! It’s how I felt after first launching my Inner Circle Mentoring Clubs six years ago – the only solution to solopreneur success… ha!
But how do you get it right?
I always tell my clients who are afraid of selling, to stop selling altogether.
Say it again? That’s right, because the only way to sell… is to forget about selling and to start serving.
You can’t serve your contacts unless you understand them, their business and what they need.
If you get to know them, help them and serve them accordingly, you may just find that what you offer will start to sell itself!
